Soil Testing & Amendment, in practice
Fertiliser applied to soil at the wrong pH is largely wasted, because the nutrients are present but chemically unavailable to the grass. A lawn that has resisted every feeding programme is very often a pH problem rather than a nutrition one.
Middle Tennessee soils run acidic in a lot of places, and lime is cheap. But it is applied by measurement rather than by habit — over-liming causes its own problems and takes far longer to correct.
Samples come from several points across the lawn. Soil varies considerably over short distances, and a single core tells you about one spot rather than about your lawn.
Sometimes the answer is that the soil is fine and the problem is shade, drainage or mowing height. We would rather say that than sell an amendment that changes nothing.

Why test the soil before fertilising?
Because Middle Tennessee soil is often the reason the lawn is struggling — a low pH that locks up nutrients, low potassium, compacted clay — and feeding a lawn with the wrong pH is pouring fertiliser onto grass that cannot use it. A test says what the soil has and needs, and it turns a guess into a programme. It costs little and it is done before the first application.
What is lime for, and does my lawn need it?
Raising the pH of acidic soil so the grass can take up the nutrients that are already there. Much of the region’s soil runs acidic, and the test says whether yours does and how much lime it needs. Lime applied without a test is either wasted or, on soil that is already neutral, harmful. It works slowly, over months, and it is applied in autumn or winter.
