Weed Control, in practice
The first question is always what grass you have. A product that clears weeds from fescue can seriously damage bermuda and the other way round, and getting this wrong does more harm than the weeds were doing.
Weeds returning within weeks usually means the weed was misidentified or the lawn is too thin to resist. Spray alone never fixes a thin lawn — bare ground is what weed seed needs, and it will keep supplying new ones.
Temperature matters as much as the product. Applied in high summer heat, many herbicides damage the turf; applied too cold, they do very little to the weed.
We leave a record of what was applied and when. It matters for re-entry times and it matters if something goes wrong.

Why is a single blanket spray the wrong way to treat weeds?
Because lawns here are fescue or bermuda and the weeds are broadleaf or grassy, and the products that kill one thing safely damage another. A broadleaf herbicide on fescue in July can burn it; a product that kills crabgrass in bermuda can kill fescue outright. The turf is identified, the weed is identified, and the treatment is chosen for both — and timed to the temperature, because most herbicides have a ceiling above which they hurt the lawn.
What is the most reliable weed control?
A thick lawn. Weeds are opportunists and bare ground is the opportunity; a dense turf mowed tall shades the soil and the seed never gets started. Pre-emergent in late winter, feeding on the right schedule, aeration and overseeding in autumn and tall mowing do more for weeds over a season than any spray, and the spray handles what gets through.
