Pre-Emergent Treatment, in practice
This is the single highest-value application of the year and the one most often mistimed. Crabgrass germinates when soil temperature reaches roughly 55°F at a two-inch depth, and a week late means chasing it all summer with post-emergents that work far less well.
Soil temperature, not air temperature, and not the calendar. Some years that is early March here, some years mid-April. We measure rather than assume.
A pre-emergent forms a barrier at the soil surface, so it has to be watered in to work — and anything that breaks that barrier afterwards, like aeration, opens a door straight through it.
If you intend to overseed, tell us first. Pre-emergent does not distinguish between crabgrass seed and the grass seed you paid for.

When is the right time to apply pre-emergent?
When the soil temperature at a couple of inches reaches about 55°F for several days — in Nashville, usually late February into early March, earlier than the calendar suggests. Pre-emergent stops crabgrass seed germinating; once the seed is up, it does nothing. A second application in late spring extends the barrier through summer, and an autumn application handles the winter weeds.
Can I overseed after applying pre-emergent?
No — pre-emergent stops grass seed as surely as it stops crabgrass seed, for weeks or months depending on the product. Overseeding is an autumn job here, and the autumn pre-emergent is timed around it, or a product that allows seeding is used. Spreading seed over a spring pre-emergent wastes the seed.
